Youth football in Belgium is organized by age and level, so that children can develop at their own pace. The general structure is set by the Royal Belgian FA, while the highest youth level is linked to the Pro League.
In broad terms, youth football consists of:
In Belgium, each child plays in a category based on their year of birth at the start of the season. The letter U stands for Under.
Not every youth team plays 11-a-side. Depending on age, different game formats exist, usually played on smaller pitches. Total playing time also varies by age, as do breaks and mandatory substitutions.
Youth teams play at regional, provincial, interprovincial or elite level (usually at professional clubs).
The higher the level, the more is expected from young players:
Elite youth football is only offered at professional clubs. It is the highest level, with many training sessions and very strict selection.
Interprovincial youth football (IP) is a level between elite and provincial. It is offered by strong amateur clubs that apply selective recruitment. Matches usually involve longer travel across the country.
Provincial youth football is a challenging option for a large group of players. These are more local leagues, with less strict selection than elite and interprovincial football. Travel is mostly within the province.
Regional youth football is the best option for the largest group of players. These are regional leagues with limited selection and a mainly recreational character. Travel is usually only within the region.
Costs strongly depend on the age and level of the players.
Total: around €300 – €800 per year
